We rely heavily on sight to perceive our bodies. Appearance has a special value in society, so it plays an important role in building relationships with others, to the point where people who are perceived as attractive often receive more attention and different treatment. This is so ingrained in society that it affects our ability to empathise with others and to recognise them as sentient beings.
It is only when we deprive people of the ability to see that they begin to perceive their environment through other senses. What happens when we can no longer see the body? What kind of relationship does the spectator establish with the human being when he or she can only hear? In the performance To Sense A Body, the artist performs in front of an audience with their eyes covered. At the entrance, each audience member is given a black sleeping mask to wear for the duration of the performance. Gradually, she begins to develop sounds with her body and through movement brings it to the point where it can no longer physically move. The performance is an exploration of the acoustic abilities of the body as an object, but in reality it highlights the dimensions of life through the sounds of a living being. Some sounds may seem funny and strange, some are recognisable and some are not, but there are times when some of them make us feel uncomfortable. Not because they are obscene, but because they scream with life.
