Crises create disruptions that offer an opportunity to act more authentically, because unpredictable events rob us of the time needed for reflection, forcing us into more impulsive behavior. A crisis rarely comes in the form of a single event, but rather as a series of radical events. Destruction is a fundamental natural mechanism, but it is undeniable that the natural disasters of recent decades point the finger at humanity. Since the Industrial Revolution, carbon dioxide has been increasing in the air more than 250 times faster than from natural sources since the last Ice Age. Just like people, nature is also crying out. Unpredictable weather, wildfires, and drought are just some of the signs of environmental instability.
In January 2021, the Iberian Peninsula was hit by a snowstorm named Filomena. Madrid was covered in snow for the first time in forty years. No tree in the city could support its weight. Broken branches, some of which were several metres long, tumbled down like corpses. The intervention aims to draw attention to the enormous loss through a heavy condensation of a material, with the wood being handpicked from the broken branches. The composition represents a symbolic graveyard, with the newly broken branches being laid to rest in the holes left behind after stumps have been removed. The proposal is based on the connection between the environment and society, with the aim of drawing attention to and sparking a dialogue about the effects of natural disasters in the context of the pandemic.
